Zebra Pleco L46 2cm

Quick Overview

The Zebra Pleco L46 (Hypancistrus zebra) is considered one of the crown jewels of the freshwater aquarium hobby. Native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, this extraordinary species is instantly recognizable by its bold black and white striped pattern, giving it a truly exotic and unmistakable appearance.

Unlike common plecos that grow very large, the Zebra Pleco remains relatively compact, typically reaching only 3.5 to 4 inches (9–10 cm) in adulthood. Its smaller size makes it suitable for medium-sized aquariums, although it still requires excellent water quality and stable conditions to thrive.

The L46 prefers warm, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water that mimics its natural river habitat. Aquariums should include caves, rock formations, driftwood, and shaded areas where the fish can hide during the day. It is primarily nocturnal and becomes more active around feeding time or after lights out.

Despite its peaceful temperament toward most community fish, the Zebra Pleco can be territorial with other L46s, especially males competing for caves. Providing multiple hiding spots is essential when keeping more than one specimen.

Unlike algae-eating plecos, the Zebra Pleco is primarily carnivorous. It requires a protein-rich diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms, and other meaty foods. It generally does not consume large amounts of algae or wood.

Due to habitat pressures and restricted export availability, the L46 remains a highly prized and collectible species among aquarists worldwide. Its stunning appearance, manageable size, and fascinating behavior make it one of the most desirable plecos available.
