Salvinia cucullata

Quick Overview

It can spread very quickly and if left untouched will eventually cover lakes and ponds in their entirety. While it offers cover to freshwater fish because the leaves of the plant blocks out sunlight, it also can block the sunlight from reaching underwater plants.

Open aquariums usually take advantage of Salvinia Natans, because the leaves shade the light from entering the tank so that algae cannot grow. Once again however, it can grow rampantly if there is enough light and nutrition, so from time to time it may need to be pruned in order to keep it under control, and stop it from overtaking the entire tank.
