Cholla wood

Quick Overview

A piece of natural desert cactus wood, Cholla wood is very decorative in an aquarium. It serves as both shelter and food for young fish and shrimp. It is very appreciated for its richness in cellulose by the shrimps which spend long hours feeding on it. Fish from the Loricaridae family also appreciate it for the lignin it contains.

Cactus wood (Cholla wood) is also an interesting bacterial support, useful both for filtration and for the development of the micro-fauna so appreciated by shrimp, due to its porous and fibrous texture.

You can also attach moss or plants such as Microsorum, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, which will take advantage of the gaps to attach their roots and develop and thus help the roots of the plants.

Cholla wood has natural tannins that lower aquatic pH and looks very intriguing underwater. It is a food source for the biofilm, which the shrimp feeds on, similar to what Catappa leaves produce in water.

It is advisable, however, to boil the Challa wood a few minutes before introducing it into the aquarium, it will float for a few hours before sinking.
