A working heater is of critical importance to the well-being and survival of most tropical fish species. This includes tropical fish that prefer slightly cooler water (African Rift Lake Cichlid, Livebearers, Danios, etc) than other species.

In short, the heater is the only thing that'll keep your water temperature stable, by stopping it from dipping below a specified point.
