A working heater is of critical importance to the well-being and survival of most tropical fish species. This includes tropical fish that prefer slightly cooler water (African Rift Lake Cichlid, Livebearers, Danios, etc) than other species.

So in essence, a heater is important even for tropical fish that prefer slightly cooler water. Why? In short, the heater is the only thing that'll keep your water temperature stable, by stopping it from dipping below a specified point. While many species will adapt to temperatures outside their ideal comfort zone, fish in general have a hard time dealing with rapid temperature fluctuations.

Be sure to use a thermometer in the tank. This'll help you regulate your heater and allow you to see if the unit is in good working order.
